Prony windfarms improving lives of local communities
Ziele: The South Pacific islands region faces increasing environmental and socioeconomic pressures sharpened by global climate change. Besides replacing dirty fossil fueled energy with sustainable power, this project tackles several environmental and societal issues. To strengthen civil society and indigenous Kanak rights, the company supports local and regional initiatives addressing employment. New Caledonia is located in a hurricane hot spot; therefore the wind turbines used have been specifically designed so they can be tilted down within a few hours in the event of an extreme weather alert.
How this project improves lives
- The project activity lead to the creation of local employment and know-how: more than 30 temporary and 28 permanent jobs have been occupied by local Kanak people which is lowering migration pressure.
- A local micro business initiative to strengthen small businesses and local economy is being supported
- Two community coordination centers which offer employment and training opportunities for young people are receiving funding
- The project has been developed along existing road infrastructure to minimize any environmental impact
- The project activity lead to reductions in the release of air pollutants, including 600 tonnes of sulphur dioxide (SO2 ), 700 tonnes of nitrogen oxides (NOx ), as well as other particulates that are typically associated to the burning of fossil fuels
