South Pole 2017 Carbon Footprint
Sustainability and inclusive action on climate change is at the heart of everything we do at South Pole. That's why in addition to helping our clients achieve and accelerate their climate action ambition, we are also committed to our own climate neutrality.
At South Pole, we routinely review our own internal sustainability practices to make sure we are doing everything we can to minimise our environmental impact and take action on climate change.
The first step in improving our sustainability is measuring our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. For this we conduct a GHG Assessment each year, which helps us track the progress we've made in reducing emissions, and provides valuable information to inform plans to further minimise our carbon footprint.
Our Carbon Footprint in 2017
South Pole is a committed climate neutral business. Measuring our carbon footprint every year allows us to measure the amount of CO2 associated with our operations, define future emission reduction targets, and offset our unavoidable emissions.
In 2017, we introduced new categories into our GHG Assessment, adding employee commute methods, waste, water use and other energy-related activities. Even still, we managed to reduce our emissions by 10% from 795 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2016 to 718 tonnes in 2017, with our emissions per employee decreasing from 5.1 to 4.2 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. Our biggest source of emissions remains business travel, which made up 78% of total emissions in 2017.
To continue improving our sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint year on year, South Pole strives to:
- Power our operations with renewable energy wherever possible
- Promote green practices amongst employees aimed at waste reduction and recycling
- Purchase environmentally-friendly, recycled and recyclable supplies wherever possible
- Minimise unnecessary travel (particularly air travel)
- Encourage the use of public transport, walking or cycling wherever possible
