South Poles’ experts at COP24 will discuss public and private climate action and channelling finance into scalable solutions, building resilience and minimising the threats of climate change to create a better tomorrow, today. Our delegation is attending the conference while also speaking, moderating and co-organising various COP 24 Side Events. We are very excited to announce South Poles’ own Side Event that we are organising with the Swiss Association for Environmentally Conscious Management (ÖBU): Voluntary Action and implementing the NDCs: How can the private sector help or hinder ?

This event will explore the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM). The session covers the design of the mechanism and relevance to Article 6 provisions. Further, the session introduces JCM developments including methodologies, projects and JCM credit issuance with implications to the Article 6 mechanism. A panel discussion will follow, with the aim to discuss the way forward for the JCM and the implications to Article 6 mechanism.

Piloting Article 6 of the Paris Agreement - From concepts to action

Abstract:
Nordic Partnership Initiative (NPI) on Upscaled Mitigation Actions in Waste Management Sector was initiated in Peru in 2011 and completed in 2018. Nordic countries and NEFCO decided to continue the co-operation, taking into account the major recent developments in international climate policy through the Paris Agreement. The focus of continued co-operation will be on supporting implementation of the Paris Agreement on a broader level and in particular on operationalizing cooperative approaches under the Paris Agreement’s Article 6 under the “Nordic Initiative for Cooperative Approaches (NICA).”

Success on climate action requires deep collaboration by a broad coalition of stakeholders across sectors and industries, as proclaimed by the Global Climate Action Agenda. Public-private partnerships (PPPs) can play a leading role in implementing projects that will lower emissions and increase resilience against climate impacts – and ultimately contribute towards the implementation of the Nationally Determined Contributions and the Paris Agreement.

Abstract:
Climate-KIC, the largest European public-private Partnership on climate change, hosts an event on financing the fight against climate change, with a specific focus on green cities and the role of innovative entrepreneurs. South Pole will present the City Finance Lab, a public-private platform to develop and test innovative financing solutions for low-carbon and climate-resilient cities. South Pole will present success cases from the pilot in European cities, and plans to expand the City Finance Lab to other continents.
