With public transport transformation urgently needed to address the dangerous levels of air pollution in Delhi, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s (DMRC) transport system is setting a precedent for cost-effective, low-carbon innovation in India’s expanding urban transport systems. As of 1st June 2021, DMRC has constructed a massive transport network of around 389 km with 285 stations.

Sustainable Development Goals

4. Quality Education

Delhi Metro Museum

was set-up by the project owner, which hosts a number of kids programmes such as storytelling session

7. Affordable and Clean Energy

Energy savings

thanks to the 70 low-emission rolling stocks project

8. Decent work and economic growth

10,000 jobs

created by the DMRC

9. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

Technological innovation

is advanced thanks to this forward thinking project

13. Climate Action

47,000 tonnes of CO2e

mitigated on average per year

The Solution

The project increases energy efficiency in the DMRC transport system by replacing old brakes with new regenerative braking technology. This switch makes braking less GHG intensive. Regenerative braking also uses the vehicle’s motor as a generator to convert much of the kinetic energy lost when decelerating back into stored energy in the vehicle’s battery.

The Impact

The technological upgrade reduces energy consumption from the electricity grid, leading to GHG emission reductions. On top, the project creates new job and training opportunities and the project owner also engages in a number of community initiatives, for example creating the popular Delhi Metro Museum.
