Closing Vietnam's energy gap and empowering local communities

The Song Ong Project is located on the Ong River in the Quang Son commune in Southern Vietnam. A three-unit hydropower plant harnesses the flow of the river to generate 40,000 MWh of clean energy each year, which is fed into the national grid and helps close the supply-demand gap.

The Context

Vietnam has suffered a critical electricity shortage in the past, as rapid development and economic expansion has seen a rapid spike in energy use nationwide. The development of the Song Ong Hydropower plant helps remedy this problem by exporting electricity directly to the grid.

The Project

This project helps reduce rolling blackouts and lessens the risk of cascading national grid collapse due to overload. As a clean and renewable energy project, Song Ong is an important investment in low-carbon industrialisation for the region, avoiding the use of coal-powered energy solutions to save 21,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. The small size of the plant ensures that there are no significant environmental impacts.

The Benefits

With the development of the Song Ong Small Hydro Project, both the Quang Son commune and wider Ninh Thuan province benefit. The project has contributed directly to the improvement of existing infrastructure through the construction of a new road, and has provided permanent employment to local stakeholders. These developments empower local communities with the opportunity to grow their businesses in a sustainable way, unconstrained by limited access to power
