Funds and Platforms
Limiting global temperature rise and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is a global mission that requires finance to shift to clean and sustainable infrastructure. But, while the capital is available, not enough of it is flowing in the right direction. Creating a pipeline of bankable investment opportunities, financial vehicles that pool funds for impact investments, and platforms where stakeholders can exchange solutions for positive impact can help.
To address investment barriers and accelerate change, South Pole develops and manages various initiatives:
- Technical assistance facilities to build a pipeline of investment-ready projects and corporates
- Impact funds to identify and invest in high-potential projects and businesses
- Action platforms to convene governments, corporates and investors to share best practice, strengthen partnerships and scale up ambition
Our funds, facilities and platforms help to address different core sustainability topics in which we are renowned experts:
- Renewable Energy
- Clean Technology
- Sustainable Cities
- Sustainable Landscapes
South Pole's fund and platform services encompass:
- Design of funds and platforms
- Financial management
- Due diligence of investment cases
- Technical assistance for corporates and projects
- Monitoring impact of investments
- Convening of stakeholders
- Communication and networking
- Designing of actions together with partners
South Pole has a 10 year grant and fund management track record (more than USD 100 million invested in 700+ projects). Some successful examples of funds and platforms managed by South Pole are the Swiss Technology Fund, the City Finance Lab, the Innovation Facility for Financing the Energy Transformation, the Jaguar Connection Program for Sustainable Landscapes and the International Water Purification Programme.
Technical assistance facilities
Since 2006, South Pole has conducted due diligence on over 10,000 sustainability projects worldwide and has provided technical support to more than 700 selected projects . Based on this experience, South Pole is also developing and managing project development facilities and programs that provide technical support to clean energy, low-carbon cities and sustainable landscape projects, e.g for waste, transport and building projects in India.
South Pole has advised a range of corporates and public institutions on the structuring of impact funds that focus on social and environmental benefits. For example, we advised the Norwegian government on the design and governance of the Colombia Sustainability Fund. Furthermore, South Pole is also managing impact funds, e.g. the multi-million Swiss Technology Fund that provides bank guarantees for small and medium-sized enterprises that sell sustainable products and services (e.g. renewable energy, energy efficiency, waste handling).
We have designed and operated a range of action platforms that bring public and private stakeholders to exchange know-how and design collaborative actions on sustainability and climate change. For instance, we are the secretariat for the Nordic public-private collaborative platform for Climate Finance, and have set up the City Finance Lab where cities, investors and advisors develop and implement new financial instruments for cities (currently in the EU, with planned expansions to other world regions).
