We support the development of sustainable infrastructure projects in line with the objectives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
We are here to support cities, regions and countries in their transition towards a climate-resilient and low-carbon economy, providing project preparation and capacity-building services for the development of sustainable infrastructure.
Sustainable infrastructure refers to infrastructure projects that are planned, designed, constructed, operated and decommissioned in such a manner as to ensure their economic, financial, social, environmental and institutional resilience and sustainability over the entire life-cycle of the project.
Infrastructure is key to economic and social development, but the sector both contributes to and is impacted by climate change. Currently, infrastructure accounts for 70% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, while 30–55% of these infrastructure assets are jeopardised by their vulnerability to climate change. Developing sustainability infrastructure that strengthens resilience to climate risks while capitalising on the opportunities of low-carbon solutions is therefore critical.
While the need for action is recognised, many public institutions lack the technical and managerial expertise to look at infrastructure projects through the lens of sustainability and climate, which in turn leads to the limited availability of bankable projects for financing.
We provide targeted support across each project preparation stage for developing a bankable project pipeline, building the capacity of local public sector stakeholders and supporting them with mobilising climate finance.
We can provide help with the following stages:
We support the structuring of sustainable infrastructure projects by capitalising on our in-depth knowledge of carbon markets and providing you with access to the global climate finance ecosystem. With proven global experience in developing more than 700 carbon reduction projects and mobilising EUR 15 billions of climate finance, we are uniquely positioned to support you at each project preparation stage.
Together, we can deliver 'climate action for all'.

CapaCITIES platform – Developing sustainable infrastructure projects in Indian cities A seven-year programme that South Pole manages on behalf of the Swiss Development Cooperation government (together with our partners ICLEI South Asia and econcept), CapaCITIES works to reduce GHG emissions and build the capacity of Indian cities and states for climate change adaptation as well as COVID-19 recovery. The programme focuses on conceptualising, structuring, developing and financing sustainable infrastructure projects and leverages public-private partnerships. |
