Ambienta SGR SpA (“Ambienta"), the leading sustainability-focused European asset manager, has recently achieved carbon neutral status for all its carbon emissions (Scope 1, 2, 3), with the support of specialist consultant South Pole.
While Ambienta, a certified B Corp since 2019 and a proud signatory of the UN Principles for Responsible Investment (UN PRI) since 2012, had already committed to Net Zero by 2030, as part of the most accelerated climate action movement called Climate Emergency Declaration COP 25, the firm has achieved Climate Neutral label this year. In order to maintain its carbon neutral status in the years to come, Ambienta has committed to addressing any future incremental emissions that will arise from expansion of reach and operations.
This certification is the first achievement of Ambienta's industry-leading Net Zero Plan, which aligns with the firm's core sustainability mission and ambitions set with respect to climate change mitigation. The plan rests on three main pillars: 1) carbon reduction activities; 2) a forest conservation project; 3) an afforestation initiative.
On carbon reduction, Ambienta is switching to renewable energy across all its offices and is embracing sustainable travel practices. By doing so, the firm will not only be able to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions but also achieve cost savings, thereby demonstrating economic viability of sustainable choices.
For forest conservation, Ambienta has invested in a conservation project in Zimbabwe called Kariba REDD+ project, one of the world's largest verified projects aimed at preserving vulnerable species and preventing deforestation. This project enabled Ambienta to compensate for all direct and indirect emissions and achieve Climate Neutral label.
Finally, to ultimately go beyond the label requirements and become net positive, Ambienta has invested in an afforestation initiative in Kenya, nearly doubling the investment needed to offset its emissions according to traditional methods.
As a leading sustainability-focused asset manager, achieving net zero emissions is a logical and natural step for the firm, which has already made good progress in reducing carbon emissions at portfolio level. All portfolio companies owned by Ambienta III, for example, are required to assess their carbon footprint and develop a dedicated carbon strategy to better position themselves against climate-related risks.
Fabio Ranghino, Principal & Head of Sustainability & Strategy, said: “As a leader in applying our knowledge of environmental megatrends to investments, Ambienta adopts a proactive approach to achieve the United Nations' 2030 Agenda objectives to address climate change. We have been dedicated to reducing carbon emissions at portfolio level for years and we are now setting ambitious new targets at GP level. I am proud that our Net Zero Plan exceeds mere certification requirements to create a truly positive contribution to global emission reduction efforts."
