Developing a climate transition plan with integrated biodiversity strategies to drive net zero for Snam

Snam partnered with Carbonsink, a South Pole company, to develop a Transition Plan Roadmap — transforming its decarbonisation strategy for 2050 into an actionable, integrated energy transition strategy that enhances climate resilience and creates sustainable value.

The challenge

Achieving net zero targets in a complex energy landscape

Snam is Europe's largest regulated midstream gas operator, leading the energy transition by building and operating infrastructure to ensure a secure, reliable and sustainable energy supply.

With a vision aligned with the Paris Agreement, Snam invests in creating a pan-European infrastructure capable of transporting traditional and decarbonised molecules such as natural gas, biomethane, hydrogen and CO₂, creating long-term value for all stakeholders and contributing to the global efforts needed towards net zero by 2050.

To achieve the company's net zero emissions targets and meet growing regulatory and stakeholder expectations, Snam has relied on the collaboration and know-how of Carbonsink to develop a comprehensive Transition Plan Roadmap considering all the planetary boundaries beyond climate change. This roadmap drives its energy transition strategy while integrating biodiversity goals.

The goal was to ensure compliance with frameworks such as the Transition Plan Taskforce (TPT) framework, acknowledged as one of the most influential standards on this topic, the Taskforce on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), the Net Zero Investment framewor and CSRD compliance while integrating the multidimensional view of planetary boundaries in the transition strategy and addressing future risks and opportunities in long-term energy scenarios.

Building an integrated transition plan roadmap

Carbonsink collaborated closely with Snam to develop a robust Transition Plan Roadmap. This plan outlines Snam's innovative approach to fully integrating sustainability across its operations and corporate strategy, with a strong focus on climate change and biodiversity targets. It is built on well-defined time horizons for decarbonisation, aiming for a positive impact on nature.

The roadmap is designed as a dynamic document that Snam will continuously update to reflect the evolving energy landscape. It also plays a key role in developing and interpreting long-term energy scenarios through 2050, helping to identify risks and opportunities that strengthen the company's resilience and safeguard its assets during the transition to net zero.

The document aligns with industry-leading climate resilience frameworks, including the recommendations of the former TCFD, as well as the Transition Plan Taskforce (TPT), CDP technical publications on Transition Plan reporting, and provisions of the CSRD ESRS E1.

Key Steps

  • Framework selection: Identifying and prioritising the TPT, TCFD, CDP and CSRD ESRS E1 frameworks to ensure compliance, credibility, and alignment with net zero goals and reporting requirements.
  • Gap analysis: Conducting an assessment of existing strategies to highlight areas needing improvement, particularly in climate transparency and biodiversity integration.
  • Action identification: Proposing targeted steps such as refining disclosures, enhancing scenario analysis, and embedding biodiversity strategy.
  • Stakeholder engagement: Facilitating collaboration with internal and communication with external stakeholders to align on transition goals and foster shared accountability.
  • Roadmap development: Co-developing the Transition Plan Roadmap, detailing transparent actions and scenarios to guide Snam toward achieving net zero by 2050.

Thanks to this collaboration, Snam has been able to clearly and reliably outline the organisation's strategy, goals, actions and resources for achieving net zero targets.

This supports the decarbonisation of its operations and the wider national system while also enhancing resilience and delivering long-term value for the protection of land, nature and biodiversity towards 2050.
