Worley is a leading global provider of professional project and asset services in the energy, chemicals and resources sectors, and engaged South Pole to help on its climate journey.
Worley's 48,000+ people are driven by a common purpose – delivering a more sustainable world. They work with customers at every stage of their projects and partner with customers, communities and stakeholders to find ways to turn our shared ambition of net zero into a reality.
Worley has also set clear net zero targets for its own operations, including committing to net zero Scope 3 emissions by 2050. To support this ambition, Worley engaged South Pole to build its Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory.
Worley's ambition is to be recognized as a global leader in sustainability solutions. As part of this, it is important that we are transparently disclosing and managing our own greenhouse gas emissions.
Sue Brown, Executive Group Director - Sustainability, Worley
Worley engaged South Pole to help identify and calculate its Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which are the emissions generated upstream and downstream in their value chain.
A unique and complex project
This project had some unique complexities, created by Worley's global operations across 45 countries, and their large range of services. By deep diving into each specific activity Worley conducts, such as engineering, procurement, and construction, our South Pole experts were able to produce a high-quality inventory of Worley's Scope 3 emissions for financial year 2020-2021, chosen as their baseline year.
Worley's Scope 3 emissions in FY2021 totalled over 500,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e). This included 11 out of the 13 Scope 3 categories relevant to Worley. The highest source of emissions resulted from the purchased goods and services which Worley procures, making up over 60% of their Scope 3 emissions. This year (FY2023), South Pole is collaborating with Worley again and refining the methodology used to calculate their Scope 3 emissions. The goal is enhanced data granularity and the ability to identify more opportunities for reducing emissions. In this way, continuous improvement of GHG emissions accounting can be achieved.
Towards net zero
Through this work South Pole supported Worley to deliver more robust Scope 3 disclosures. Worley is now working towards improving the accuracy of their Scope 3 disclosures, which will allow them to set robust Scope 3 emissions reduction targets and progress towards their net zero commitment.
It was a delight to work with the South Pole team who helped us to structure and complete the complex task of quantifying Worley's Scope 3 emissions for the first time. This is the first step in tackling our Scope 3 emissions, which are an order of magnitude higher than our Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
