This circular biogas project located in Southeastern Thailand aims to tackle the environmental and social issues that are associated with wastewater lagoons. By upgrading the lagoons, the methane, usually released into the atmosphere, is captured and used to generate renewable electricity to power the operations of the plant. In a circular fashion, the project not only cuts greenhouse gas emissions from being released from the lagoons but additionally displaces fossil-fuel-derived energy that would otherwise be consumed by the plant.
On top of the environmental improvements that come with proper wastewater management, the project has a plethora of social benefits. Due to improved local air quality communities benefit from better health, and are at less risk of developing chronic respiratory conditions. From a socio-economic perspective, the project boosts the local economy through the creation of jobs for local workers, both within the construction and operation phases of the plant.
