Advancing regional climate action: Asia Pacific Climate Week 2017 to kick off on 13 December

Asia-Pacific Climate Week (APCW) is part of series of annual “Climate Weeks" held in each region of the world to advance regional climate action through the promotion of market-based instruments and financing for climate action to scale-up ambition and achieve cost-effective mitigation and adaptation across the region.
The overarching aim is to support implementation of countries' Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, identify opportunities for scale-up and explore the role of capital markets to finance the NDCs. Drawing on the presence of ministers, senior policymakers, scholars, private sector leaders,
practitioners, associations, project developers, finance experts and development partners from around
the world, APCW 2017 will feature a series of events in Bangkok from 13 to 15 December, including the
Asia Pacific Carbon Forum, workshops and roundtables on carbon trading systems and carbon pricing
and finance for climate action, along with sector discussions on energy and industry, sustainable
agriculture, oceans, urban development, and waste management. This is the first major climate event in
Asia-Pacific region since the UN Climate Change Conference held in Bonn in November, and as such it
will provide an opportunity to take stock of the outcomes and what they mean for the region.
APCW 2017 is co-organized by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), UN Development Programme (UNDP), UN Environment, UNEP-DTU Partnership, Asian Development Bank (ADB), International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES). APCW 2017 will be held at the UN Conference Centre, Rajadamnern Nok Avenue, Bangkok.
Highlights of the week include:
A High-Level Ministerial Segment for Climate Action (15 December), examining ways to enhance Global Climate Action, and harness capital markets to scale-up finance for climate action. It aims to endorse a Regional Climate Action Agenda as the key outcome.
Latest carbon market developments in the region, including the new ETS in China, Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, and the future of the Clean Development Mechanism.
The role of the private sector in raising pre-2020 ambition, how to advance climate action in various key areas including oceans, urban development, waste management, sustainable agriculture, and energy and industry.
An Emissions Trading Simulation exercise.
The role of monitoring, reporting and verification, transparency, and ways to strengthen regional collaboration on carbon pricing for cost-effective achievement of the NDCs.
