South Pole makes the world carbon neutral for 1 second ahead of COP25
Global sustainability solutions provider South Pole is backing mounting public calls for more ambitious climate action by making the entire world carbon neutral for 1 second on 28 November ahead of the UN Climate Summit in Madrid next week.
Achieved by investing in climate protection projects that are reducing emissions and protecting communities and ecosystems on the ground, this action demonstrates that the solutions needed to mitigate climate change and reduce emissions are available now.
The move is part of South Pole's new movement for inclusive, holistic climate action for all – the ActNow platform – which empowers individuals everywhere to come together and collectively drive emission reductions, protect ecosystems and communities, and work for a better tomorrow.
Launched in September in Switzerland, the ActNow campaign has sought to grow along with the global movement for more climate action: on September 24, as part of Climate Week NYC, South Pole celebrated its newest office in New York City by making the entire city climate neutral for 1 hour.
As global communities mobilise to demand bold climate action, with demonstrations like School Strike 4 Climate, world leaders will meet in Madrid next week where they are set to ramp up their emission reduction commitments and establish a roadmap to meet the ambitions of the Paris Agreement and cap global warming "well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels".
Published this week, the UN Environment Programme's 2019 Emissions Gap Report reveals that increasingly urgent action is needed by countries to reach this target – who will need to collectively cut global emissions by 7.6% every year between 2020 to 2030 to do so.
South Pole's global team of sustainability professionals and climate policy experts will be on the ground at a number of COP25 side events in Madrid – find out where to catch them here.
