South Pole joins big brands and governments in global bid to tackle plastic waste

14 Mar 2019 by South Pole News

Global sustainability solutions provider South Pole joins the 350+ signatories of the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, an initiative by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

The commitment also marks the launch of South Pole's new service offering around corporate plastic stewardship, which ranges from plastic footprinting at a corporate level, to strategic advisory and the facilitation of corporate action on plastic mitigation measures.

As part of this offering, South Pole is developing a portfolio of engagement projects for corporates, designed to tackle plastic pollution in developing countries that often lack the means to manage and recycle waste effectively.

“Plastic waste, especially in oceans, is soaring up the scale of global environmental concerns," says Patrick Bürgi, Director Funds & Platforms and Co-Founder. “At the same time, addressing the plastic pollution crisis can be turned into an incredible opportunity to save millions of dollars, safeguard fragile ecosystems, and unleash a wave of innovation with benefits for the whole corporate value chain."

According to the first New Plastics Economy Global Commitment report, consumer goods companies and retailers have committed to increasing recycled content in their packaging to an average of 25% by 2025, compared with the current global average of just 2%.

But despite corporate ambition and mounting public pressure, there are very few standardised, reliable and broadly recognised solutions for companies to effectively address their plastic footprint.

“We believe that companies are central in redefining the way we use and manage plastics, and want to provide them with robust tools and approaches to fulfil their commitments on addressing plastic waste. We are incredibly excited to join leading organisations, such as the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, to realise a vision of stopping global plastic waste and pollution," he continues.

To further define best practice in managing plastic waste along corporate supply chains, South Pole invites interested companies to take part in its corporate plastic stewardship survey, which aims to improve and design corporate solutions as part of an EU funded initiative.
