In July, South Pole Group together with Cementis and EcoConServ were announced as the winning consortium for a consultancy project for the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
The project, titled "Technology and Policy Scoping for a Low-Carbon Egyptian Cement Industry", aims to develop a low-carbon roadmap for the cement industry in Egypt. It will provide guidance for industry players and relevant decision makers in Egypt on reducing sectoral GHG emissions while improving the sector's energy efficiency and energy security.
" Although this is the first consultancy project for us in Egypt, we are establishing ourselves as a leading sectoral expert," says Patrick Burgi, Director Public Sector at South Pole Group. "Among other projects, South Pole Group is involved in an ongoing project on behalf of the Nordic Partnership Initiative on designing a climate change mitigation programme at national level for the cement sector in Vietnam and has recently finished a study for CAF and KfW with the aim to identify GHG mitigation projects in the cement industry in Ecuador, Peru and Mexico"
The Roadmap for the cement industry in Egypt will furthermore include a set of policy actions, technology and market solutions that are best tailored to reduce or mitigate GHG emissions by the sector, as well as the required investments to implement such actions.
The preliminary results of the project will be presented at the climate change conference - COP21 - in Paris in December.
