Harnessing wind power to boost Bulgaria’s renewable future
Despite its growing vulnerability to extreme weather and thus the climate crisis, Bulgaria continues to depend largely on fossil fuels, in particular coal. Struggling to kick-start its energy transition, solar and wind power made up only 1.7% of the country’s total energy consumption each in 2021, and around 3% each of electricity generation. Transitioning to renewables is an absolute necessity for Bulgaria to safeguard it's future from a social, economic and environmental perspective.

The Saint Nikola wind project is located in the Municipality of Kavarna, Bulgaria, and involves the construction and operation of 52 wind turbines that are connected and supply electricity to the national Bulgarian grid.
As well as generating renewable electricity and reducing reliance on fossil fuels - the project creates job opportunities for the local community while additionally contributing to local infrastructure such as the upgrades to local roads and providing finance to local health care clinics.
