Restoring grasslands and protecting livelihoods in Ethiopia through adaptive grazing
In Ethiopia's Oromia, Somali and South Ethiopia regions, pastoralist livelihoods depend on communal rangelands. Overgrazing, recurrent drought and expanding cultivation are degrading them: from 2007 to 2022, land productivity declined or showed early signs of decline across 64% of targeted zones. Competition over shrinking pasture and water raises conflict risk.

AfriScout LLC and implementer Global Communities aim to help over 50 pastoralist communities restore rangelands through adaptive multi-paddock (AMP) grazing, planned and tracked with the AfriScout Regen app. Listed with Verra (VCS 5517), it is undergoing validation against the Verified Carbon Standard.
Planned grazing and rest let grasses recover, building soil organic carbon and improving water retention. Over 30 years, the project is forecast to deliver 4,896,343 tCO₂e in removals and reductions. Communities co-design grazing plans and will share carbon revenues, while healthier rangelands should reduce livestock mortality and resource conflicts.
