Gaizhou Landfill Gas Power

Converting Chinese waste into a valuable source of renewable energy

China
Gaizhou Landfill Gas Power

Waste in China is an immense issue, with the volume of debris increasing exponentially each year for the last decade. Landfills are thus an inevitable part of the country’s waste management system. But with large landfills come large quantities of toxic landfill gas emissions (LFG), which are released into the atmosphere through decomposition.

The Solution

This project aims to tackle emissions associated with landfill waste at the Gaizhou Landfill Site in Gujiazi Village, situated in Liaoning Province, China. By capturing potent methane emissions that would have otherwise been released into the atmosphere, the project converts gas into electricity and supplies it to the Northeast China Power Grid (NEPG). In doing so, the project effectively replaces electricity that is generated from coal-fired power plants, which usually feed the NEPG with energy.

The Impact

By displacing coal-derived energy from the national grid, the project significantly reduces planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions and simultaneously improves local air quality. The local economy additionally benefits through the project, with 10 jobs created for local workers.
