Biogas from the repurposed wastewater powers the San Miguel Liquor distillery
The project is located within the TSML distillery in Wangkhanai Subdistrict, Thamuang District, Kanchanaburi Province, Thailand. The TSML distillery produces alcoholic beverages, and as part of the production process, it generates large amounts of wastewater with a high organic matter content.

The Papop Biogas project plans to install a UASB digester to treat the wastewater with an estimated Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) reduction efficiency of about 95%. The biogas produced from the wastewater treatment, estimated at approximately 30,000 m³ per day, will be used to fuel the distillery's boilers and generate electricity via a newly installed engine, reducing reliance on external energy sources from fossil fuels.
The biogas captured by the UASB system will be used to generate heat for the TSML distillery's boilers and to produce electricity through a newly installed engine. The project reduces greenhouse gas emissions by preventing methane release from the anaerobic lagoon system, reducing carbon dioxide emissions from the combustion of fuel oil in the boilers, and displacing electricity from the grid, which is often generated from fossil fuels. Additionally, the project owner will provide ongoing training for employees each year, enhancing their skills. Finally, the project will increase the distillery's revenue compared to the current situation.
