Folketrygdfondet, the Government Pension Fund Norway is the largest institutional investor on the Oslo Stock Exchange which is why they have, via their investments, an influence on many companies.
To show its commitment to the environment, Folketrygdfondet has joined the league of pension funds seeking to improve their understanding of their portfolio's climate risks: in 2013, the Government Pension Fund Norway commissioned their first CO2 analysis of the Norwegian equity portfolio. In 2014, a new analysis of the Oslo Stock Exchange Benchmark Index (OSEBX) was prepared on behalf of Norsif, the Norwegian Forum for Responsible and Sustainable Investment. Norsif in turn engaged South Pole Group and CDP to prepare the analysis to give all Forum members access to both quantitative and qualitative data on Norwegian companies' GHG emissions and climate strategies.
This collaboration gave Folketrygdfondet an overview of the true scale of their portfolio's emissions exposure and provided additional support for their dialogue with portfolio companies. The pension fund has also pledged in its latest ownership report to encourage companies to adopt strategies and measures to make them less CO₂ intensive over time.
