A2A partnered with South Pole to launch a climate transition plan. The plan sets business-aligned pathways to achieve net zero by 2050. It transparently outlines long-term decarbonisation strategies, aligning with concrete actions while ensuring A2A’s economic and financial stability.
A2A, Italy’s largest multi-utility, aimed to disclose a climate transition plan to reinforce its leadership in the energy transition. It aims to ensure long-term business resilience and define a strategic decarbonisation roadmap extending beyond the 2035 strategic plan horizon.

To move beyond standard reporting, A2A collaborated with South Pole to create a forward-looking strategy that anticipates the challenges of a changing energy landscape.
The collaboration involved deep technical analysis to align A2A’s multi-utility operations, ranging from energy production to waste management, with a 2050 net zero trajectory. By looking past their 2035 strategic plan, we helped the organisation build a framework that ensures commercial viability while fulfilling their role as a primary enabler of Italy's green transition.
A robust transition plan requires more than just data; it requires organisational alignment. Over a three-year period, we facilitated extensive engagement across diverse business units and corporate functions. By bridging the gap between technical decarbonisation pathways and financial planning, we secured vital buy-in from executive leadership. This collaborative approach ensured that the final plan was not just a disclosure document, but a practical internal compass for future decision-making and investment.
The resulting climate transition plan, launched publicly in December 2025, represents a landmark for the Italian utility sector. It outlines a clear commitment to net zero emissions by 2050, tackling both direct operations and complex value-chain (Scope 3) emissions. By integrating circular economy best practices with traditional energy transition goals, the plan provides A2A with a holistic strategy to support the sustainable development of the local geographies and communities it serves.
Our Climate Transition Plan is the result of a complex and structured journey that involved the entire Group in a process of cross-functional dialogue and alignment.
The objective was to define a clear and credible vision to 2050, outlining how A2A intends to address the climate transition over the long term. The Plan builds on work carried out over the past four years to define our Net Zero Ambition and progressively identify concrete decarbonisation levers across our different businesses. With the support of Carbonsink, a South Pole company, we were able to develop a solid pathway that combines a long-term vision with the tangible actions and capex set out in the Strategic Plan.
