Shanxi Province is known as the coal pit of China as it contains roughly one-third of the total national coal deposits. Shanxi is also home to some of the most polluted cities in the world and faces grave environmental problems, which are severely impacting its growing economy and the health of its inhabitants. Air pollution levels are particularly concerning, and rivers are also heavily contaminated with wastewater from the surrounding industry.

Sustainable Development Goals

4. Quality Education

20+ scholarships

of CNY 10,000 granted to local young people each year, allowing them to attend college, or university in Shanxi’s capital of Taiyuan

6. Clean Water and Sanitation

60-70% less water

consumed by the plant.

7. Affordable and Clean Energy

264,000 MWh

generated on average each year, promoting China’s renewable energy industry.

8. Decent work and economic growth

150+ jobs

created in plant operations, boosting the surrounding economy.

13. Climate Action

262,000 tCO2e

mitigated on average annually, by capturing waste gas and using it for renewable energy.

The Solution

This project aims to address some of the environmental issues that Shanxi province is facing by capturing large quantities of waste gas produced by blast furnaces at a local steel mill and converting it into green electricity, which is then recycled for use at the plant. The project improves local air quality by avoiding uncontrolled gas emissions, and a modernised water cooling system considerably reduces the water consumption of the plant.

The Impact

As well as cutting emissions, the project is delivering benefits to the local community. To date, more than 150 new jobs for the local community have been created, with ll employees receiving technical training and wages above typical Chinese standards, while financial support has been offered to older residents and university scholarships for students.
