Philanthropy's vital role for climate action

Financing the goals of the Paris Agreement requires significant re-allocation of capital at scale to unlock substantial investments and seize opportunities that would otherwise not be possible. The United Nations Environment Programme estimates we will need to spend up to $300 billion a year by 2030 to build climate resilience. Philanthropy has an important role to play in climate action, yet it's estimated that only 2% of philanthropic funds target climate mitigation globally.

How can philanthropic organisations work with South Pole?

1. Climate funds

   Contribute to one of South Pole's climate funds, or create your own.
   For example: Launched in June 2021, the Landscape Resilience Fund will invest in projects and local businesses to improve the resilience of smallholder farmers and other vulnerable communities on the frontline of climate change.

2. Multi-stakeholder climate action platforms

   Join a multi-stakeholder action platform or co-create a new initiative with South Pole to connect relevant stakeholders and accelerate climate action.
   For example: Launched in January 2021, the D-REC Initiative aims to connect off-grid (distributed) renewable energy entrepreneurs to new investment, with the potential to transform the lives of hundreds of thousands of people living in energy poverty.

3. Unlocking carbon finance for your climate projects

   Learn about opportunities to fund early-stage projects that are identified by South Pole as having high potential for climate impact and carbon sequestration, or receive support from South Pole to add a sustainable and supplementary source of income to fund your existing climate action projects.
   For example: South Pole have partnered with Landcare NSW to reduce and remove carbon emissions, as well as to restore and protect the unique biodiversity of New South Wales.

4. Climate finance advisory

   South Pole's Climate Advisory practice provides tailor-made research and advisory on climate finance. Strategies to de-risk investment and unlock private capital are pivotal when it comes to channeling finance towards sustainability goals, and our experts can help.
   For example: Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) commissioned South Pole to develop the Energizing Finance: Missing the Mark 2020 report that provides an understanding of the gaps and barriers affecting financial disbursements for energy access projects.

Our partners include community organisations, NGOs, non-profits, investors, landowners, technology providers, utilities, and corporations.
