The Nam Hong project involves building 2 small-scale hydropower plants, each with an installed capacity of 8MW on Nam Hong stream in Chieng Cong commune. The renewable electricity generated by these plants will be sent to the national grid. The project has been designed with very careful consideration of the local environment by limiting the size of the project to maintain the natural flow of water and replanting 3.8 ha with trees to replace any vegetation lost during the construction phase.
The project contributes to global climate mitigation efforts by displacing fossil fuel derived fuels. It also focuses on promoting sustainable development in the region: upgrade and improve roads that then will be integrated into the local traffic system, create jobs, and provide training so staff can develop their skills. At meeting with local residents water management was a very important issue, the project owner therefore has committed to strict measures to preserve local water quality and in addition the project has built toilets for the local community to use.
